The fun never ends.

If you didn't hear, Honey's little illness cleared up beautifully.

All except for a little cough. He sometimtes just has to stand and cough for a while, but is fine afterwards.

Ohoho, but now?

He has conjunctivitis.

At least I'm 90% sure that's what it is. It shows all signs of being feline conjunctivitis, and is in one eye. I'll be using a tea and bicarbonate of soda treatment on both of his eyes 2-3 times a day until it clears up. (If it does not, it's off to the vet.)

The thing is, if it is conjuncivitis, it'll probably come back. Again. And again. And again. It can clear up in days or in months, and usually it lasts through most of the cat's life. But that's fine, I'll happily clean his eyes every time it pops back up again. Poor squinty kitty.

"Most of the causes are infectious. While many different kinds of infectious organisms can cause conjunctivitis, there are only three that are common culprits: Feline Herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1), Feline Chlamydia, and Feline Mycoplasma. It is important to know that a case of conjunctivitis can have one, two, or all three organisms together causing the problem, and that Feline Herpesvirus cannot be transmitted to people -- only to cats. It is a very species-specific virus."

Lol he might have herpes.

A little backstory - I was used to having two cats from childhood to adulthood that did not attack other pets. Budgies, gerbils, rats, guinea pigs, etc. - nothing. One of my cats used to try to clean the gerbils, and she would let one of my guinea pigs sleep under her chin, essentially using him as a pillow.

Then Tiger passed away and I got Honey.

I expected him to be more... Cat-like. But, not to this extent.

Despite my precautions, he managed to catch one of my gerbils on two occassions, one resulting in a very bad injury meaning that the gerbil had to be put to sleep.

He used to whack the rat cage, and chirp at the budgies (which are very out of his reach, as are the rats now - my gerbils are in my bedroom which Honey is no longer allowed anywhere near.)

However, this morning I came downstairs and the living room was absolutely caked in bird seed, seed husks and budgie feathers. It turns out that he had tried to attack the budgies, and my Dad had rescued them before going to work, leaving me to clear up the mess.

By my powers of observation, it appeared that the cage had been knocked down, obvious by the mess, but there was a bamboo cane on the sofa - which means that one or both of the budgies were set free out of the cage. (We use the cane as a perch for them when they feel the need to sit on picture frames.)

Unfortunately, none of our doors close properly. The doors between living room to hall and hall to kitchen don't even have catches, they're never shut. The bedroom doors are useless and can be pushed open by a cat. ('Thus why mine has a lock inside, so I lock it every night, but hate having to do so.)

I keep trying to get my parents to turn my sister's old room into a 'pet room' because it is the only room in the house with a proper door handle, proper working catch and a lock as well. But they have totally ignored this.

I just don't know what to do anymore.

I refuse to lose another cat, but what can I do? I can't punish him, because it usually happens when I'm not there. I don't work, so I'm here almost 24/7, but I cannot watch him every second of the day. Things will always escape my eye, I'm not superhuman.

I'm not used to having a pet that is so typically like his species. I've had cats and smaller pets for like ten years, and only just encountered this problem. Honey will attack everything that moves.

I'm in a bit of a bad mood with him at the moment, because after clearing up the mess - he was bothering me for treats. But he was impatient, and ended up digging a claw very deep into my thumb. Thanks to a bit of OCD, any deep cuts that break the skin away cause me to viciously need to get rid of the skin, so I'm sitting here with a plaster on my thumb feeling very jittery.

I love him, but Lord is he a bother.

Honey is a bit poorly.

  • Dec. 2nd, 2007 at 10:09 PM

I shall copy my posts from http://www.catsey.com ;o

1st December, 11:34 AM

I think it's just the winter weather catching up with him - as our cats always have an off day or two in this season. Anyone else get that?

He normally calls to come indoors in the morning, but today I called and called, but nothing.. Then he suddenly waltzed in from out of the outdoor laundry basket, which is right by the door. o_O So I don't know what took him so long.

Now he's just kind of... 'Blah'. The day before last he was a bit like this, but then yesterday perked up and chased me around the house as usual. Today he's just sort of tired and inactive. He doesn't look depressed like I'm used to with very ill cats, he just seems very neutral and out of character. He's not even gotten super excited and chased Spike around the house like he does every day.

He even ignored a prawn that I offered him, so I know that something's up. XD I'm hoping that it's just a little bit of winter ickyness and nothing more, or perhaps he ate something unpleasant.

1st December, 04:22 PM

He's had a lick of cream but still hasn't eaten anything. He went out to go to the toilet, and followed Spike around before changing his mind and coming back indoors. He spent a while just following me around looking upset - and when I picked him up, he made a very sorry sound.

After lots of cuddles, he's sound asleep on the kitchen table again. I hope that this passes soon, as it's so strange to see such an energetic little cat act this way.

2nd December, 09:21 PM

Honey is still feeling poorly today. He managed to eat some dinner last night, and seemed better this morning - following me around, meowing at me until he could jump on my lap for a purr session.

He had some breakfast, and some tuna - but then fell back into a state of 'blah', sleeping on the table all day.

He refused to touch his dinner earlier, so.. I decided to try a Tiger trick, from when she was alive and had difficulty eating, and I had to find a way to convince her to eat.

I fed him a little bit by hand (ew), then switched to a teaspoon, and he managed a couple of spoonfuls but refused to eat anymore. I'm happy, because it's better than nothing. C:

This is the LJ, the LJ for Honey.

It is a public LJ for my small, insane cat.

Why did I make him his own LJ? Because I don't think that people appreciate me rambling on like a crazy person about my cat. So! I made this LJ for all Honey-related nonsense.

If you would like to read my own LJ, you can find it at http://nathan_dorian.livejournal.com

So, firstly, a bit about the mite.

Honey is an 8-month-old black and white moggy, he is also semi-longhaired which makes him fluffier than your average puss.

Some time in late March, my beloved cat Tiger had to be put to sleep because of an inoperable tumour. She was my best friend and I missed her dearly. I was determined to an adopt a cat, for living without one made me life feel completely empty. However, it turned out to be much more difficult than expected.
Adoption centres didn't return my calls, all places ignored my e-mails, shelters didn't have cats that could go to a home with a dog, etc. Despite really not wanting to go with a kitten, my parents and I decided to try that instead as it was kitten season - but every time I called up about accidental litters, all kittens were reserved. I was pretty much on the verge of giving up at this point.
One day my parents came home with the surprise that they had stumbled upon something interesting. They found the place that cremated my cat Tiger when on the way somewhere, and decided to ask them about kittens. They were directed to a cat sanctuary, but got lost along the way and instead found a 'Kittens' sign in pretty much the middle of nowhere.
They followed the narrow, awkward, countryside road to a tiny farm where there were some kittens indeed for sale. All of the kittens were calico, but one - a black and white kitten with strange grey fur on it's back. So, they reserved it, at a week old.
Four weeks later I went to visit said kitten and stood awkwardly as a small, crying lump of fluff cried in my hands. Another week later and the best was home.

What started out as a quiet, normal, oddly calm female kitten turned out to be an absolutely loopy, freakishly small male kitten.

Onward for adorable photos! )
